Welcome to the D.O.C.K.!
The children of Trinity UMC have a special place that they visit every 4 to 5 weeks – it’s called the D.O.C.K. Let us introduce you to Beak'n, the D.O.C.K.’s resident pelican who is ready to answer some of our frequently asked questions.
Q: First of all, what is the D.O.C.K. and how did it get started at Trinity UMC?
A: I am so glad you asked! The D.O.C.K. is a fun, safe place for all children ages 2 – 5th grade. We meet at the D.O.C.K. about once a month when we gather together to sing, dance, and most importantly to learn more about God. The D.O.C.K. was created after several members at Trinity spent time in ceaseless prayer and conversation about children and the ministry we are offering them at Trinity.
Q: So we have to ask…what’s a pelican doing in the Williams Brice Center?
A: Well I’m not just any pelican…my name is Beak'n, and I’ve lived at the DOCK for a few years now. I love meeting the people that visit the D.O.C.K. as well as the awesome people that hang out there. When I first arrived at the D.O.C.K., I didn’t know much about God, but with the help of my friends, the great people who hang out at the D.O.C.K., I learn more and more each time they visit. The leaders at the D.O.C.K. told me that they felt like the Williams Brice Center had much to offer in terms of space, lighting, and most especially, a place to call our own. So I guess you could say that I’m in the Williams Brice Center because, well, when I am there and all the kids come to visit, I look forward to learning as much as I can about God.
Q: What does the D.O.C.K. stand for?
A: Well, first of all, the D.O.C.K. is a place. It’s on the water, it is a good fishing spot, and it has a big lighthouse nearby. But the D.O.C.K. also stands for “Doers Of Christ’s Kingdom,” because it is our hope that after spending time at the D.O.C.K that’s what all our kids will be – Doers Of Christ’s Kingdom!
Q: Do you have to have a special invitation to come to the D.O.C.K.?
A: Absolutely not! We would love to have anyone that wants to know more about God join us at the D.O.C.K. The D.O.C.K. was originally created for kids ages 2-5th grade but, we hope that their parents will join us, too, as well as any other adults who want to have a good time while learning more about God! After our time together at the D.O.C.K. the kids are invited to gather in small groups to talk about the Scripture that they have learned about that day at the D.O.C.K. At this time we invite the parents and other adults to gather for their own small group to discuss the scripture as well as enjoy a short coffee break.
Q: What about the youth? Do they help at the D.O.C.K?
A: I am so glad that you asked! They youth are the best friends a pelican could ever have! In fact, several of them are the ones that hang out at the D.O.C.K. on a regular basis to help me understand God’s Word. We have a special team of youth that lead our dancing and our music. They are really awesome. And after our time at the D.O.C.K., they also gather in a small group to talk about the Scripture of the day.
Q: Does the DOCK replace Sunday School?
A: No. The DOCK does not replace Sunday School – it is just a part of it. Trinity has a really cool rotation Sunday School program called the Faith Forest where kids experience God through all of the different learning styles each week. Each rotation is 4-5 weeks long and the kids focus on one Bible theme for those 4-5 weeks. At the end of the rotation the kids visit the D.O.C.K. where they review and continue to learn practical life applications to the scripture stories they have studied in the Faith Forest.
Q: Is there anything else you want people to know?
A: Yes! There is nothing we would love more than to have you join us! Stay tuned to our webpage for the 2011-2012 dates when we will gather at the D.O.C.K.! Hope we will see you there!
